Tracie L. Augusta, PhD, DNP, ACNP/FNP/ACNS, MSN-ed, RN, is an assistant professor at the Loewenberg College of Nursing, University of Memphis, Tennessee. She began her nursing career with an associate degree from Shelby State Community College (1995) and earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Tennessee State University (1997). Excelling in critical care, she pursued advanced nursing education, completing a Master’s in Nursing Education and Clinical Nurse Specialist - Adult Health at Union University (2006), followed by a Doctor of Nursing Practice in Acute Care Nurse Practitioner at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (2010) and a PhD in Nursing Science at the University of Memphis (2023).
Dr. Augusta is the tract coordinator for the Adult-Gero Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program for the College of Nursing. Prior to transitioning to a full-time faculty role, she was a vital member of the adjunct faculty, teaching graduate-level courses in the master’s program for thirteen years. Her contributions to the nursing profession are beyond the academic roles she has held. She is recognized as a trailblazer, founding the Chi Chi Chi chapter of Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc., in 2016. As chapter president, over $10,000 in scholarships was awarded to Memphis nursing students, she developed a leadership program, and co-organized a city-wide educational initiative, “The State of the Union Address of Healthcare,” during the COVID-19 pandemic to enhance public awareness and alleviate fears.
In her current role as Southeast Region Secretary of Chi Eta Phi Sorority. Incorporated, Dr. Augusta has started several innovative initiatives to bring the region into the 21st century. She chairs the Social Policy and Health Advocacy Committee locally. Her professional affiliations include the Association of Black Nursing Faculty (Health Policy and Leadership Fellow, Communications Committee, and Research Committee), the American Nurses Association, Mississippi Nurses Association, Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society (Beta Theta at-Large Chapter) (Conference Committee), the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (State Award for Excellence 2018), the Society of Hospital Medicine, the American Heart Association (Nominations Committee, CV Nurses Division), National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) (Inclusive Excellence Committee), and the National Black Nurses Association (local Board of Directors, Programs and Projects).
Dr. Augusta has made significant contributions to nursing research and scholarship. Her area of expertise lies in hypertension among Black Americans and cardiovascular disease in Black women, making her a respected speaker on these topics. She has presented and published in peer-reviewed journals on how spiritual well-being plays a vital role in healthcare decisions for Black women and how certain models, such as the health belief model and the transtheoretical model, can be used to shape research in Black America. She has presented at several conferences, hosted, and participated in webinars and podcasts. As an internal medicine hospitalist, she continues to practice. She is an emerging leader in academia and practice, making significant contributions and achieving remarkable progress—someone to watch closely for future accomplishments.
