Advancing Nephrology and Nursing Education: Dr. Jami S. Brown’s Multifaceted Contributions to Healthcare

Jami S. Brown, DHEd, MSN, RN, CNN, is an Associate Professor and the Traditional BSN Concentration Coordinator in the College of Nursing at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, Tennessee. She received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi, in 2002; a Master of Science in Nursing degree focusing on Nursing Education from Regis University in Denver, Colorado, in 2006; and a Doctor of Health Education degree from A. T. Still University in Kirksville Missouri, in 2009.

Dr. Brown's commitment to nursing extends beyond academia. She has made significant contributions to her community and national organizations, organizing events such as the Memphis Kidney Action Day to raise public awareness of kidney disease. Her participation in other health fairs and initiatives demonstrates her dedication to improving public health.

Dr. Brown is a member of the American Nephrology Nurses Association (ANNA). She is the National Secretary for the 2024-2025 ANNA Board of Directors. In addition, she serves as a Chair of the Bylaws and Policy Committee. She is on the Editorial Board for the Nephrology Nursing Journal. She also serves on the Board of Directors for the Nurses on Boards Coalition as a member representative for ANNA. In addition, she served within ANNA as a member of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee, the Research Committee, and the Leadership Committee.

Dr. Brown’s continued service also includes serving as co-chair for the Publications and Communication Committee for the Association of Black Nursing Faculty. She also serves on the Editorial Review Board for the Association of Black Nursing Faculty Foundation Journal. She is an active member of the Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society (Beta Theta at-Large Chapter). She is a past member of the chapter’s Governance Committee and Leadership Succession Committee. Dr. Brown is a member of the National Black Nurses Association (NBNA) and has served as a mentor for the NBNA Collaborative Mentorship Program. She also remains an active member of the American Nurses Association, the National League of Nursing, and the Tennessee Nurses Association.

Dr. Brown has made a significant contribution to nursing research/scholarship. She has presented and published in peer-reviewed journals on chronic kidney disease, social determinants of health and health disparities related to kidney disease, diversity, equity, and inclusion, and nursing education. She has also been the author and co-author of multiple book chapters focused on nephrology. She has also presented at several conferences, authored additional educational resources, and hosted and participated in webinars and podcasts.

Dr. Brown has been recognized for outstanding achievements in nursing. For example, she has received several awards and nominations that have demonstrated her excellence in teaching. She was selected as a Leadership Fellow in the College of Nursing for the 2022 cohort. She has also received awards for service.  To highlight Dr. Brown’s contribution to disseminating research to nurses for use in nephrology nursing practice, education, and/or administration, she was awarded the ANNA Research Sharing Award in 2023.
